Maniharon ka Rasta is a narrow, colourful lane in the old walled city, branching off Tripolia Bazaar, that is devoted almost entirely to one of Jaipur's most distinctive crafts — the making of lac (lakh) bangles.

What to shop for

The lane is lined with tiny shops and workshops of the manihars (bangle-makers), who craft and sell the vividly coloured, ornamented lac bangles that are a signature of Jaipur and an essential part of traditional Rajasthani dress. The bangles are often studded with mirrors, stones and glittering embellishments, and can be made to order and sized to fit.

The experience

The real magic of Maniharon ka Rasta is watching the bangles being made — the lac is softened over a flame, shaped by hand and decorated on the spot. It is a living workshop as much as a market, and a wonderful glimpse of a centuries-old craft.

Visiting tips

Visit during the day when the makers are at work. Bangles are inexpensive and bargaining is customary. The lane opens off Tripolia Bazaar, close to the City Palace and Isarlat tower.
