Garh Ganesh Temple

The Garh Ganesh Temple occupies a commanding spot high on the Aravalli hills near Nahargarh Fort, overlooking the whole of Jaipur. Reaching it involves a climb of a few hundred steps, but the reward is a rare and ancient shrine, a deeply devotional atmosphere and some of the finest panoramic views in the city.

History

The temple was established by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur, in the early 18th century, at the time the new city was being laid out. It was consecrated according to Vedic rites as a guardian shrine watching over the capital, and it has drawn pilgrims ever since.

A rare form of Ganesha

What sets Garh Ganesh apart is its idol: here Lord Ganesha is worshipped in his child (bal) form, without the elephant trunk visible — an unusual depiction that distinguishes this temple from other Ganesha shrines. Its hilltop position was chosen with care: it is said that Sawai Jai Singh II could gaze upon the deity from the Chandra Mahal of the City Palace below, using binoculars, so that his day might begin with the sight of Ganesha.

The climb and the views

A flight of roughly three hundred and sixty-five steps leads up to the temple — one for each day of the year, as tradition has it. The ascent is steady rather than strenuous, with resting points along the way, and langurs and peacocks are often seen on the slopes. From the top, the outlook over the Pink City, the Jal Mahal and the surrounding hills is magnificent, especially in the clear morning air.

Visiting tips

Entry is free. Go early in the morning to beat both the heat and the midday haze, and to enjoy the temple at its most serene. Wear comfortable shoes for the steps and carry water. Wednesdays and Ganesh festivals are the busiest and most vibrant days to visit.
