Nahargarh Fort

Nahargarh Fort stands guard on the crest of the Aravalli hills, looking directly down over the Pink City spread out on the plain below. Together with Amer and Jaigarh forts, it formed a strong defensive ring around the old capital, and today it is one of Jaipur's most loved spots for panoramic views — especially at sunset.

History

The fort was built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II as a retreat and a link in the city's defences. Its name means "abode of tigers". A popular legend tells of the spirit of a Rathore prince, Nahar Singh Bhomia, who is said to have haunted the construction site until a small temple was raised in his honour within the walls — after which the work proceeded, and the fort took his name.

Architecture

The best-known structure inside is Madhavendra Bhawan, a graceful two-storey palace built later by Sawai Ram Singh II. It contains a cluster of identical suites for the king's queens, cleverly connected by corridors so the ruler could visit any of them unobserved by the others. The walls carry delicate frescoes, and the rooftop offers one of the finest views in the region.

What to see

Beyond the palace, the ramparts invite an unhurried walk with the whole of Jaipur laid out below. A popular café and restaurant within the fort make it a relaxed place to linger, and the nearby Nahargarh Biological Park and a wax museum add to a half-day outing. The fort has also featured as a backdrop in several well-known films.

Visiting tips

Time your visit for the late afternoon so you can watch the sun set over the city and stay as the lights come on below — it is genuinely spectacular. The approach road winds up the hillside, so allow time for the drive. Carry a light layer, as the hilltop can be breezy in the cooler months.
