Birla Mandir Jaipur

Birla Mandir, formally the Lakshmi Narayan Temple, is a graceful modern temple built entirely of gleaming white marble at the foot of the Moti Dungri hill. Serene, spacious and beautifully lit after dark, it offers a calm contrast to the older monuments of the city and is a favourite with both worshippers and visitors.

History

The temple was built by the industrialist Birla family and opened in 1988, one of several Birla temples across India. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Narayan) and his consort Goddess Lakshmi, the deities of preservation and prosperity.

Architecture

Carved from fine white marble, the temple rises in three tall shikharas (spires) that catch the light through the day and glow when floodlit at night. Large panels of stained glass depict episodes from Hindu scriptures, while the walls and pillars carry delicate carvings. In an unusual and thoughtful touch, the temple also features images of great figures from other traditions and civilisations — including philosophers such as Socrates — reflecting a spirit of universal respect.

What to see

The main sanctum houses the marble idols of Lakshmi and Narayan, worked with remarkable finesse. The surrounding lawns are well kept and peaceful, and the elevated setting gives views towards the Moti Dungri fort-palace on the hill above. Aarti (prayer ceremonies) are performed morning and evening, and the atmosphere during the evening aarti, with the marble aglow, is especially moving.

Visiting tips

Entry is free, and the temple is open to visitors of all faiths. Dress modestly and remove footwear before entering. It is loveliest in the evening, when the marble is illuminated. The temple sits close to Moti Dungri Ganesh Temple, so the two are easily visited together.
