Moti Dungri Ganesh Temple

The Moti Dungri Ganesh Temple is among the most beloved and busiest temples in Jaipur, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. It nestles at the foot of the small Moti Dungri ("Pearl Hill"), crowned by a private palace that adds a storybook backdrop to the shrine below.

History

The temple was established in 1761, and the revered idol of Ganesha is said to have been brought to Jaipur by the royal family. Over more than two and a half centuries it has become one of the city's most important places of worship, deeply trusted by the people of Jaipur for the fulfilment of prayers.

The deity and the palace

The sanctum enshrines a striking idol of Lord Ganesha, worshipped here in a form draped in rich vermilion and adorned daily. On the hill directly above stands the Moti Dungri palace, an elegant private residence built in a Scottish-castle style; it is not open to the public, but its silhouette above the temple is a familiar city landmark.

Worship and traditions

Wednesday is considered Ganesha's day, and the temple then draws enormous crowds, with queues stretching well beyond the gates. It is a cherished local custom for families to bring the first wedding invitation — and often invitations for any new venture, a new home or a new vehicle — to be offered here before Lord Ganesha, seeking his blessing for an auspicious start. The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with particular grandeur.

Visiting tips

Entry is free. If you prefer a quieter darshan, avoid Wednesdays and festival days; early mornings are calmest. Dress modestly and leave footwear and phones at the stalls outside. The temple is centrally located near Birla Mandir, and the two are very easily combined into a single peaceful visit.
