Galtaji Temple

Galtaji is an ancient and atmospheric Hindu pilgrimage site tucked into a narrow gorge in the Aravalli hills, just east of Jaipur. A cluster of honey-and-pink sandstone temples, pavilions and holy water tanks fills the ravine, fed by natural springs — and its resident troops of monkeys have earned it worldwide fame as the "Monkey Temple".

History and legend

The site is associated with the sage Galav, who is said to have performed penance here for many years, and it has been a place of worship since ancient times. The elegant temple buildings that stand today were largely raised in the 18th century by a courtier of the Jaipur court, giving the complex the appearance of a grand haveli or palace rather than a conventional temple.

The sacred kunds

Spring water flows down through the gorge and collects in a series of sacred tanks, or kunds. The waters are considered holy, and pilgrims bathe in them, particularly during festivals such as Makar Sankranti. The most revered is the Galta Kund, which is believed never to run dry.

The Monkey Temple and Sun Temple

Large troops of rhesus macaques and langurs live throughout the site and have made it a favourite subject for wildlife photographers and documentary makers. On the ridge above stands the Surya Mandir (Sun Temple), visible from much of Jaipur, from where there are sweeping views over the city at sunset. The painted ceilings, carved pillars and rounded pavilions of the lower temples reward a slow, curious wander.

Visiting tips

Entry to the temples is free. Come in the early morning or late afternoon for softer light and cooler air. Be sensible around the monkeys — do not carry visible food or tease them, and keep a firm hold on bags, phones and spectacles. Comfortable shoes help with the walking and the gentle climb to the Sun Temple.
