About Ram Niwas Garden
Ram Niwas Garden is the historic green lung at the heart of Jaipur, a large and much-loved public garden just south of the old walled city. Generations of residents have come here to stroll, and it holds several of the city's cultural institutions within its grounds.
History
The garden was laid out in 1868 by Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II, originally as a famine-relief project that also gave the growing city a grand public park. It was designed in a formal style with fountains, lawns and tree-lined avenues.
What to see
The garden's centrepiece is the magnificent Albert Hall Museum, the oldest museum in Rajasthan, whose floodlit Indo-Saracenic façade dominates the park after dark. Also within the grounds are the Jaipur Zoo, an aviary and greenhouse, an art gallery and the Ravindra Manch theatre, a hub for the city's cultural performances. Wide paths, shaded benches and open lawns make it a pleasant place to relax between sights.
Visiting tips
Come in the early morning or evening, when families and joggers fill the paths and the museum is beautifully lit. The garden is central and easy to combine with the old city bazaars just to the north.
