Jal Mahal

Jal Mahal, the "Water Palace", appears to float serenely in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake, framed by the Aravalli hills and the ramparts of Nahargarh beyond. Its low, symmetrical silhouette mirrored in still water is one of the most romantic and instantly recognisable views in Jaipur, particularly at dawn and dusk.

History

The lake itself was created in the 16th century by damming the Dravyavati river to relieve the region's frequent famines. The palace was built and later renovated during the 18th century by the rulers of Amber and Jaipur, notably Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh I, who used it as a lodge for royal duck-hunting parties.

Architecture

Jal Mahal is an elegant example of blended Rajput and Mughal design, built in red sandstone. Remarkably, it is a five-storey building of which four floors remain submerged beneath the water when the lake is full, leaving only the top storey and its rooftop garden visible. A careful restoration in recent decades revived the palace, its terrace gardens and the water quality of the lake around it.

What to see

The palace interior is not generally open to the public, so Jal Mahal is enjoyed as a view rather than a walk-through monument — but what a view it is. The promenade along the lakeshore is a favourite spot for photography, and the restored wetland has become an important refuge for migratory birds, drawing flamingos, pelicans and many other species in season. Vendors and small craft stalls line the walkway.

Visiting tips

Come at sunrise or sunset, when the light turns the sandstone gold and the reflection in the lake is at its most beautiful. The stop is quick — around 20 to 30 minutes — and sits conveniently on the road between the city and Amer Fort, making it an easy addition to a north-Jaipur itinerary. There is no entry charge to view the palace from the shore.
